What is Inequality

Introduction:

We know the meaning of the symbols “>” (is greater than) and “<”, (is less than). “Seven is greater than minus eight” is expressed as “7 > -8” and “ten is less than fourteen” is expressed as “10 <> 12, 4x – 5 <> -2 is an inequality or inequation.

Inequation Definition:

A statement involving variable(s) of the sign of inequality viz, >, <, ≥ or ≤ is called an inequation or an equality.
An equation may contain one or more varaibles. Also, it may be linear or quadratic or cubic etc.

Example:

Following are some examples of in equations:
3x - 2 <>
2x + 3 ≤ 0
2x + 3y <>
5x + 4y ≤ 3
2x2 + 3x + 4 > 0
x2 - 3x + 2 ≥ 0
x3 - 6x2 + 11x - 6 > 0
x3 + 6x2 + 11x + 6 ≤ 0

Solution set:

The set of all possible solutions of an inequation is known as its solution set.
For example, the solution set of the inequation x2+1 ≥ 0 is the set R of all real numbers whereas the solution set of the inequation x2+1 <>
